How we got there, and where we chose to stay while in Kuala Lumpur

A little rougher around the edges, and a tad less ‘westernised’ than Singapore, Kuala Lumpur is a bustling and vibrant city, despite it’s grey, hazy appearance. It is a shopping mecca, a melting pot of different cuisines, and a city that is just bursting with culture and nightlife.

My first ever visit to Malaysia was way back in 2007 as I stopped over at KLIA on my way to London… a visit that you can hardly count as a ‘visit’. My next taste of Malaysia came in April of this year, when I got to experience all that Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi had to offer in a whirlwind 5 days.

Of course, there are many ways in which we could have got ourselves to Kuala Lumpur, but for this particular visit, myself and Jenelle travelled with AirAsia. Being a maximum of 7 hours flying time from anywhere in South East Asia, and just 6 hours from Kuala Lumpur, air travel to these cities is relatively fuss free from Perth. I have always flown AirAsia for my short haul flights to Asia, as I have always been keen to make sure I have as many extra dollars for my holiday as possible (and let’s face it, is the tv in the seat back and meal included in the airfare really worth an extra $200+??). With an iPad loaded full of Dance Moms (don’t judge), a beautiful seat (ahem, row of seats) in the quiet zone, and a traditional Nasi Lemak – that I picked and pre-booked online – delivered an hour or so into the flight, the flight was as seamless as any, and we were landing in Malaysia before I knew it!

Just a 45 minute train ride from KLIA2, Le Meridien is quite literally located at the ‘hub of all the action’… across the road from the KL Sentral station. It took me a little while to get my bearings being in a new city and all, but after a thorough explanation from the lovely bellman, I learned that we were just an underground train ride (or an Uber ride if that is more your style) away from anywhere we needed to be, or anything that we wanted to see.

At first, the idea of staying 31 levels up was so incredibly daunting for me, but after a few hours, I was thoroughly enjoying the sweeping view of Kuala Lumpur, visible even from my bed. Just 2 floors up, from the communal club lounge – reserved for those staying in a club room or suite – there was a different view again, out across either side of the tower (a view best enjoyed with a drink from the bar in hand). Our access to the club lounge proved invaluable as we met some of the most incredible characters up there over breakfast each morning.

Like all good hotels, there were more great facilities than we could poke a stick at. The large, shared pool area was a fantastic spot to go and beat the heat (and perhaps join in a game of catch with a group of kids… which we may or may not have done), and the gym is extremely well equipped, but it was the huge range of bars and restaurants that really had us won over.

Jenelle and I had the pleasure of dining at a few of the different restaurants, but if was Favola, the Italian restaurant headed up by Milanese/Sardinian chef Domenico Piras that really stood out to us. You could see the love and passion that Piras has for his craft in every single dish that was placed on our table. Much more than just a standard ‘pizza and pasta’ restaurant, Piras served us up Italian delicacies with a twist – our favourite being the incredibly rich and well balanced squid ink, saffron and glacé cherry risotto.

With only a few days to spare in Kuala Lumpur, it was a shame we didn’t get to explore too much more at Le Meridien, but that makes a better case for us to get back there next time!

Be sure to stay tuned over the coming weeks for further posts about our KL/Langkawi trip, as well as a video diary of what we got up to!
