As if I needed even more reasons to love the tropical fruit, pawpaw…

sm-mcarthur-natural-paw-paw-6So, my family loves pawpaw.

The top drawer in the bathroom of our family home was a mecca for pawpaw based ointments and salves. As a teen, I remember watching my mum’s skin care routine with interest, including her nightly application of a pawpaw salve that she said my grande-tante used. To be honest, I used to think they were crazy for using such a thick balm on their skin. Now, I look back and can fully understand why my mum chose to include a slathering of thick, sticky pawpaw salve in her beauty routine…

If you ever had the chance to see my grande-tante’s skin – or any of my Mauritian relative’s skin for that matter – you too would come to understand why mum was quick to jump on the bandwagon. My Mauritian relatives did not look their age at all. Almost completely wrinkle free, they all had the plumpest, smoothest skin I have seen on anyone past the mid century mark! Sure, I know I have to credit some of that to the amazing Mauritian genes (which I hope I managed to inherit!), but my family also swore by the rejuvenating properties of the antioxidant rich pawpaw, which grows freely in the tropical climate of Mauritius.

While coating their skin in a thick salve may have worked for my mum and relatives, unfortunately my own skin couldn’t handle the thick, greasy consistency of the balms. Needless to say, I never got to test out their little beauty secret.

Thankfully, skin care has come a long way since those days, and I no longer have to slather my skin in a balm to reap the benefits of pawpaw…

I was recently introduced to the WA owned McArthur Natural Products range. Their inclusion of ‘up to 60% pawpaw extract’ in their products was music to my ears. You can only imagine how excited I was to finally get in on the pawpaw action I had been missing out on all these years. Who wouldn’t be excited at the prospect of seemingly age defying skin?! Because trialling new skin care products always presents the risk of a reaction for me, I was extremely happy to know that, along with their standard lines, McArthur had a therapeutic range (***please see note at the end of the post) and a healthy selection of non-scented products.

sm-mcarthur-natural-paw-paw-3I ended up opting for the fragrance free complete skincare cream, gentle cream cleanser, hydrating facial cream, and psoriasis, dermatitis & rash cream. Being fragrance free, the body cream did have a slightly odd scent to it while I applied it, but once it had absorbed into my skin that had totally disappeared. Unlike the balms my mum used to use, the creams were quickly absorbed into my skin, and there was no greasy residue.

Honestly, within just a day of using the moisturisers – both face and body – I could quite literally see and feel the difference.

While the face cream and body cream have left my skin feeling incredibly soft and supple, the dermatitis cream has actually been my saving grace. It isn’t the nicest of things to talk about, but often I will break out in rashes in my armpits. As you can imagine, hair removal and even the application of deodorant becomes quite unbearable when my skin is stressed. I found that applying the therapeutic cream under my arms before bed meant that I woke up with a far less aggressive rash in the morning. Winning! It feels so good to not be paranoid about itchy, sore, un-deodorised underarms!

Finally, I am able to see why my family made such a fuss about using pawpaw on their skin!

After religiously applying my McArthur creams for the last 2 weeks, my skin feels amazing. Not only is it less itchy/irritated, but all of those antioxidants, enzymes and vitamins A, C and E have left it looking and feeling super radiant. The Mayans didn’t refer to pawpaw as the ‘tree of life’ for nothing… and clearly my Mauritian relatives and McArthur have found the perfect way to harness the power of it!

Has anyone else tried pawpaw based skin care products before? If you have, I would love to know your thoughts on them! If you have ever used the McArthur range, or plan on trying it, I would love to know what you think of their products!
