Our long, drawn out summers in Perth, lend themselves to long, drawn out weekends. WA is home to the infamous ‘Sunday Session’, and here are some of the ones that you need to try…

We may now officially be in Autumn, but anyone who lives in Perth (or who knows Perth well) knows that ‘Autumn’ is just a title we give the the period of time across March/April. Our Autumns couldn’t be further from the American autumn, even the Tasmanian or South Australian Autumn. Normally, the summer sunshine sticks around for a few weeks after the season, and we sure know how to make the most of it!

Even throughout March and April, there are weekend festivals galore, and the good old ‘Sunday sess’ is still going strong. For those who may be unfamiliar with this term, a ‘Sunday session’ is essentially a long lunch or afternoon catch up session that takes place at a bar/pub on a Sunday, accompanied by good food and drinks. Essentially, you can have a Sunday session at whichever venue you please, but in my opinion, some venues in Perth do it better than others.

If you are looking for something to do this Sunday, and a Sunday sess sounds just like something you would like to do, do yourself a favour and check out one of these venues (Warning: I have a thing for waterside venues)…

The Cottesloe Beach Club

The Cott – as it is affectionately known – has come a long way since the days of sandy astro-turf and bare feet! As a 19 year old, I loved a Sunday session at the super laid back Cott. Now, the Cott has a totally different, more upmarket vibe. It is always fun to throw on a fun jumpsuit, make my way down to the coast and enjoy a beverage with friends in the gorgeous outdoor bar, peppered with striped umbrellas and white outdoor couches. The Cott is also currently home to the Le Jardin garden – a pretty, green space that celebrates Le Jardin bubbly!

The Brisbane Hotel

One of my all time favourite pubs in Perth has to be The Brisbane Hotel. Just on the outskirts of the CBD, this pub has one of the biggest beer gardens in the area and the chillest crowd ever. It also has a menu to boot (note: the weekend menu is different from the larger mid-week menu). The staff are beyond friendly and they all have a really good grasp on the alcohol they are serving, which comes in handy when the beer and wine lists are as long as your left arm! Head in after 3.00pm for their ‘Sunday Social Club’ and enjoy sweet tunes by some of Perth’s best DJs, giant slices of pizza, cheap beer and cheap frose!

Ku De Ta

If the name sounds familiar, it probably is… Ku De Ta Perth is the little-big sister of the iconic Seminyak beach bar! Ku De Ta is the newest kid on the block but it has already cemented itself as one of the best Sunday sess venues in Perth. Perched over the Swan river (I told you I love waterside venues!), this spacious venue is the perfect spot to catch some afternoon rays and an impeccable view. With not too much else but a few other restaurants and nature around, it is quite the destination venue. If you are going to Ku De Ta, you are settled in for the whole afternoon!

Coast Port Beach

If uninterrupted views of our insane West Australian sunsets are what you are after, Coast Port Beach should be your Sunday Session venue of choice. Coast is a lot less strict on the ‘sandy feet and bathers’ than The Cottesloe Beach Bar, so it is the ideal spot if you plan to spend some time on the sand prior to having some beverages. On the topic of beverages, they most definitely should be purchased alongside one of Coast’s epic seafood platters.

El Publico

OK, so this is kind of cheating. It isn’t exactly a Sunday session, but I think a boozy brunch counts as the start of a Sunday session… and boy oh boy does El Publico do an amazing boozy brunch! Right next door to the line up for a table at Mary St is El Publico – a mezcal and tequila bar by night, and a phenomenal brunch joint by day. If people watching is your thing, one of the alfresco tables is where you need to be! Kick start your Sunday with one of your breakfast fav’s (with a distinctly Mexican spin) and one of their 3 Bloody Mary options, or go straight for a Michelada (a Mexican beer, shot of tequila and tomato salsa picante).

I would love to know your favourite Sunday session spots too! Leave me a comment with where you choose to spend your Sunday afternoons!
